Tom HyderHead of Advanced Innovation, Marelli Tom grew up loving the outdoor life in the Oxfordshire countryside, but with a nuclear physicist father the lure of science and engineering was strong. Childhood evenings in the ’70s spent in the control room of the particle accelerator lab playing a primordial moon-lander game on a mainframe; no graphics, just a command line, usually ended in collision with the lunar surface.
At Marelli, Tom soon joined the Motorsport group in Milan to develop data acquisition and telemetry systems and his career spans the period from the “end of innocence” that was Senna’s accident to the present day – the age of data. In that time we have seen DOS give way to Windows, floppy disks to USB, networking arrived in the paddock, spread spectrum turned from curiosity to WiFi, modems and bulletin boards had their day in the sun, then internet, mobile data, the cloud, AI/ML, big data & analytics.
The transition from real to virtual.
A stint developing KERS systems in 2008-2015 brought Tom back to the reality of mechanical engineering, his spacialisation, and to be a consumer of data instead of a producer. In recent years he has been responsible for Marelli trackside support and operations in FIA Championships then Head of Motorsport R&D and now Advanced Innovation for the Marelli group.
